University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario N9B 3P4 Frank Simpson Professor of Geology and Coordinator, IDRET, Windsor International MANY PATHS TO WATER FOR DEVELOPMENT 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2002 209 Odette Building, Wyandotte and Sunset Different disciplines, working together, give the best chances of success in international-development research, with a focus on water. Participatory management of natural resources by project partners, among the poor of less developed countries, sets the scene for multidisciplinary interaction. The poor must assume ownership of project technologies, if applications of the research are to be sustainable. The University’s Earth Sciences Department worked with BAIF Development Research Foundation, Pune, and the rural poor on a management strategy for water supply in Akole Taluka, Maharashtra State, India. Water-related aspects of indigenous knowledge, religious practice, existing land use and ancient, Indian Science were integrated with modern techniques of hydrogeology and approaches to water and soil conservation from other dryland areas. Demonstration sites for water harvesting and spreading gave a year-round water supply for domestic use. As well, improvements were made to agricultural production, livestock management, gender equity, poverty alleviation, public health and village morale. These outcomes are sustainable. Lessons learned contribute to training of BAIF’s programme personnel. Projects of the Department in Nigeria and Ukraine and possible, future involvement of the University in international and development activities are considered briefly. This discussion is presented in the context of World Water Day 2002. For more information, phone Rosemary Halford, 253-3000, ext. 3506. No admission charge. E-Mail: hrgmail@uwindsor.ca |
