International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

• The IAEA's water resource programme focuses on the use of naturally occurring isotopes in water to provide information about the source, age and flow of water on Earth. Called isotope hydrology, these nuclear techniques are also used to monitor water pollution in marine and freshwater environments, to identify and assess new groundwater aquifers and to check dams for leakage.
• The IAEA also provides technical assistance to those Member States interested in pursuing the use of nuclear energy for to desalinate seawater, as an option for providing freshwater.
• Support and technical assistance is provided to Member States for these and other water related activities through the Department of Technical Co-operation.
